Step

30 January 2024

Step classes offer a dynamic and high-energy workout using a height-adjustable platform. Come and learn a series of choregraphed movements to music on your step to target your cardiovascular fitness, endurance, coordination, and balance – all while having fun and finishing your class with a bang by putting the moves together for an epic finale routine!

HOW TO APPLY
What to expect

You’ll learn a routine built up over the entire class, finishing with a grand finale. Each instructor creates their own choreography, so every class is different. Instructors will typically change their routine every 2-3 weeks, depending on the class.

At your first Step class
  • Set your step to the lowest height. Ask the instructor for assistance if you need to.
  • Focus on your leg patterns – forget about the arms for now.
  • All choreography blocks will be taught with a ‘base layer’ of moves by the instructor, which are then given trickier moves as progressions. Feel free to stick to the ‘base layer’ as offered by the instructor while you’re starting out.
  • It takes a few classes to learn the basic moves for step – and to get addicted. Look out for Step Basic on the timetable; it’s a fantastic class that focuses on more simple choreography and establishing a foundation of basic Step moves.
Adding intensity

Want to level up your Step workout and increase your heart rate? You can:

  • Increase your step height.
  • Add jumps or propulsions (the instructor will show you how for particular moves).
  • Increase the range of motion of moves (think higher knees, bigger kicks).
  • Get your arms moving above your head more.
Benefits of Step
  • Increase aerobic capacity through improved cardiovascular fitness.
  • Build strength and muscular endurance, particularly in the lower body.
  • Improved coordination and balance.
Who shouldn’t attend step?

In our experience, people with certain knee injuries find this class difficult. However, everyone is different. So, give it a whirl and see how you feel. You can always leave the class if it's not working for you, but please let the instructor know beforehand if you are at all unsure. The instructor will be sure to include more appropriate options throughout the class for you.
