Fines and payments

΢ҕl Libraries is now fines-free for borrowing items from most of our collections. To encourage fair and equitable use of our resources, we do still apply fines for overdue loans in the High Demand collection and for any overdue items that have been recalled. We also charge for damaged and lost items. Find out about fines and payments.

HOW TO APPLY

΢ҕl Libraries are now fines-free for borrowing items from most of our collections. We do still apply fines for overdue loans in the High Demand collection and for any overdue items that have been recalled. We also charge for damaged and lost items. This is to encourage fair and equitable use of our information resources and materials. 

΢ҕl students can pay fines and lost book charges from their Canterbury Card account. We never take the money off until you ask us to.

  • Make sure money is loaded onto your Canterbury Card, either at a reload station by EFTPOS, or online by credit card (via ).
  • Pay the fine or lost book charges using your Canterbury Card in person at the information desk.
  • ΢ҕl staff and external members should visit a library information desk to organise payment by EFTPOS. 
  • You can check recent payments from your card at your . Your balance may take several minutes to update after a payment.
  • If you are unable to load money onto your Canterbury Card or visit the library you can pay by internet banking with the details below.

Fine rates

The following fines apply for different types of loans:

Please note that items checked in or renewed after the grace period will incur fines from the due date, including the grace period.

Fines are calculated at midnight each day. Fines will still be charged if you renew a book after midnight but before the library opens.

The Library provides a courtesy notification service reminding borrowers of overdue materials. Failure by the borrower to receive or read the notification does not prevent fines being applied for the late return of material. 

Recall fine rate: $6.00 per day

Borrowing blocked when amount overdue reaches:$60.00

Borrowing blocked when amount overdue remains unpaid for: 28 days or more.

Please note that long-term failure to pay fines may result in the debt being sent to ΢ҕl Financial Services for recovery and further university-wide sanctions.
