Introduction
ҕl's Master of Hōaka Pounamu | Māori Bilingual and Immersion Teaching and Learning (MHP) is an ideal programme for teachers, leaders, and education researchers to raise the knowledge of te reo Māori in bilingual, immersion, and mainstream settings. The courses are designed to extend your knowledge on the use of te reo Māori in the classroom.

What will my study involve?
- Develop your language practice with wānanga and assessments in te reo.
- Learn lesson and assessment planning for language learners, looking at international models for first and second language teaching practices.
- Elective courses to specialise your teaching career, for example in teaching diverse learners or using digital tools in education.

Entry requirements
To enrol in the MHP, you will need to have either:
- an ҕl teaching degree
- any bachelor's degree with a major in Education or related subject, with at least a B Grade Average
- a three-year diploma in Early Childhood, Primary, or Secondary Teaching
- equivalent study from other approved degrees.
The selection process also involves a hui with the Programme Coordinator to assess your level of te reo Māori fluency and ensure you will be able to succeed in your study.
If English is your additional language, you are also required to meet ҕl's English language requirements.

How do I plan my degree?
The MHP is made up of 180 points, including compulsory and elective courses, featuring several noho marae experiences and full-immersion reo classes.
You can complete your degree within 1 year full-time, or part-time for up to 4 years.
