ҕl offers the only major in Russian in New Zealand. Russian courses at ҕl have two main components: Russian language; and the culture, history and society of Russia and the former Soviet Union. Courses in the latter are taught in English and allow students to study Russian culture and society, including literature, film, painting, dance and music. They complement other studies in European and Eurasian history and culture.
