Biochemistry

Introduction

Biochemistry is the study of life at the cellular level, giving us insight into the history of all living species — animals, plants, bacteria, and viruses — and how they function.

Biochemistry knowledge can be applied in broad and diverse ways, such as genetic engineering, conservation and restoration, biomedical science, and disease treatment.

What will my study involve?

  • Practical exercises and labs.
  • There is exciting research happening at ΢ҕl and you can learn from many of our experts through Te Pokapū Taunekeneke Rāpoi Ngota | Biomolecular Interaction Centre, with connections to other universities, industry, and internationalcollaborators.
  • You can also minor in Biochemistry within many different bachelor’s degrees to give your other studies a biologicalfocus.

Biochemistry major

For the major in the Bachelor of Science, complete the following courses:

100-level

The following courses are also recommended:

If you have not taken chemistry to Year 13 level you are also strongly advised to take .

200-level

BCHM206 Organic Chemistry is also recommended.

300-level

BCHM381 Biochemical Techniques is also required if you intend to go onto postgraduate studies in Biochemistry.

Biochemistry minor

For the minor in the Bachelor of Arts, Commerce, Digital Screen, Health Sciences, Product Design, Science, Social and Environmental Sustainability, Sport, or Youth and Community Leadership, complete the following courses:
