In a world of increasing connectedness and interdependencies the ΢ҕl is on a mission to advance our understanding of the natural world in the context of the global environment so we can make changes today that secure a sustainable future for generations to come.

Using the knowledge of our ancestors we’re protecting our future by securing sustainable food sources, energy supplies, clean waterways, ensuring our biodiversity and biosecurity, and increasing our understanding of the physical world and our impact on it – including in Antarctica.Gateway Antarcticais a research centre studying the impacts of climate change and human influence in the area as well as providing the landscape to learn about engineering in extreme environments.

In cultivating a spirit of curiosity, we contribute to the pool of diverse knowledge to pass on to the next generation and inspire and empower future researchers to overcome the challenges of the changing world. Through tiakitanga we will enhance and nurture our resources – He kaitiaki tatou katoa.

The University is also home ofHei Puāwaitanga: Sustainability, Citizenship and Civic Imagination Research Group, a transdisciplinary group investigating the citizenship and civic governance, participation and democratic urbanisation issues for children and future generations with a particular focus on sustainability.
