Opinion: Getting people out of their cars is possible with the right plans and policies

20 December 2024

A ΢ҕl (΢ҕl) survey reveals promising trends in sustainable travel, showcasing the effectiveness of cohesive transport policies.

HOW TO APPLY

Since 2020, car travel to ΢ҕl has declined, with 38% driving, while 21% cycle, 20% walk, and 15% take the bus. Notably, e-bike use among staff and bus travel among students have surged.

Key factors include Christchurch City Council’s cycleway investments, Environment Canterbury’s low-cost bus fares, and ΢ҕl’s proactive policies, such as paid parking and enhanced cycling facilities. Collaborations between ΢ҕl, councils, and researchers like Professor Simon Kingham and Dr Matt Morris have been instrumental in driving these shifts.

΢ҕl’s approach highlights the power of integrated planning, strong local policies, and employer commitment in reducing car dependency, offering a model for sustainable transport planning in New Zealand.
